The Prime Minister of the Government and the Minister of State for Irish, the Gaeltacht and the Islands, Joe McHugh TD announced on 9 July 2018 that it is intended to prepare and implement a comprehensive language plan for Castlebar as a Gaeltacht Service Town.
The Head Organisation, in partnership with Conradh na Gaeilge, the local people and local organisations, would like to foster and increase the knowledge and daily use of Irish in Castlebar gradually over the 7-year period of the plan. In addition, this Irish Plan aims to promote Irish language services, and social events through the medium of Irish, in Castlebar which would benefit Castlebar itself and the language planning process in LPT in North Mayo in West Mayo LPT and Tourmakeady Gaeltacht.
